Marjorie E. Wondergem, 94, was granted eternal salvation in the presence of her Lord Jesus on 12 January. She was predeceased by her husband of 67 years, Hugo (Jim) C. Wondergem, USNret., and infant son, Billy, her parents Jack and Gladys Smith and brother Kevin of West Australia. Marjorie is survived by her daughters Diane Bryant (Jerry), Donna Reynolds (Reynolds), and son Kenneth (Carmen), grandchildren Jeremy Bryant (Paige), Catherine Wondergem (Rick), Kendall Clithero (Joe), Keri (Anderson) Jones, Bryan Goz, Allison Goz, great-grand children Blakely Bryant, Rory Bryant, and Anderson O’Callaghan Jones Jr.
Born in West Australia where she is also survived by sisters Faye, June, and Erica. Marjorie attended school in Dalkeith and completed nursing school in Perth. It was there she met her husband while caring for American G.I.s and sailors in hospital. They were married in May, 1945, and shared over 67 years of romance until he passed in 2012. As a faithful Navy wife she shared duty stations in Morocco, Italy, and Japan and numerous stateside assignments. When Jim retired in 1970, they made their home in Virginia Beach and attended Calvary Presbyterian Church faithfully as members over 47 years.
The family will celebrate Marjorie’s earthly life in service at Altmeyer Funeral Home, 5792 Greenwich Rd., Va. Beach, at 11:00 on 16 Jan. with Reverend Mark Bender officiating. The family will meet guests one hour prior to the service and burial will follow at Albert Horton Veteran Cemetery in private service. The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to Intrepid Hospice nurses and staff for their compassionate care. In lieu of flowers, memorials should be made in Marjorie’s name to either the American Lung Association or to the building fund of Calvary Presbyterian Church. Online condolences may be offered to the family at www.altmeyerfh.com.
Marjorie’s legacy was that she rarely, if ever, uttered a disparaging word about another person; reminding her detractors that we are all God’s creation.
