Mary Elizabeth Litalien

May 31, 1931 - September 16, 2019

Mary Elizabeth Litalien, born May 31, 1931 in New Jersey, passed away peacefully on September 16, 2019 in Newport News, VA.

Mary was predeceased by her parents, John and Betty Ocskai, her brother, John Ocskai, and her son, Stephen. She is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth (Robert) Bullock and grandchildren: David, Adam (Kara) Bullock, Kathryn, Megan (Jeremy) Roberts, and Alyssa (Laurie) Challenger. Mary was also blessed with five wonderful great-grandchildren: Henry, Lillian, Dylan, Abigail and Ethan. She is also survived by a son, John (Cathy) Litalien.

Our family wishes to thank the incredible, loving staff at Mennowood Retirement Community, especially those in Comfort Cove. They serve with true selflessness.

Mary was raised in Brooklyn, NY, attending Good Shepherd Elementary School and St. Francis High School where she was a stand out basketball player, affectionately known as “Big Mo”. She became a Virginia Beach resident in 1965, raising her family in Point O’View. Mary was actively involved in her church and community, particularly with all programs involving disabled individuals and was a fierce advocate for her son, Stephen, who had cerebral palsy and was mentally handicapped. She spent a number of years volunteering at Sentara-Leigh, was an active member of the BPW and enjoyed being a “Red Hat”. After retiring from her job as a secretary with Civil Service, she traveled with longtime friends to England, Ireland and Hungary and enjoyed taking cruises. Nothing was more important to her than spending time with her family. Those who knew her loved her for her quick smile, her laughter and her graciousness. Her last three years were spent at Mennowood Retirement Community where she made many new friends and was loved by the staff.

A funeral mass will be held at Church of the Ascension, 4853 Princess Anne Rd., Va. Beach, VA on Thursday, September 26. Visitation begins at 1:00 p.m., Mass follows at 2:00 p.m. The Altmeyer Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements. Online condolences may be expressed by visiting www.altmeyerfh.com.

What our families say...

In my opinion, there is no better facility in Virginia than Altmeyer Funeral Homes. Not only was Chris Sisler there to hold my hand every step of the way, his family members were holding the door on the day of the funeral to help and encourage me. I will never forget their grace. He led me and my family through the process as a personal friend and neighbor, and as the ultimate professional.
