Committal Service

Mary Therese Hennessy departed this life on November 6, 2018, one month before her 90th birthday.  At the time of her peaceful passing, she was in the company of close family members.
A native New Yorker who was born in Brooklyn, Mary moved to Virginia Beach in October 2011 to be closer to her family members.  She never married but was blessed with dozens of close family relatives living around the world who she loved to visit, and she always had the close companionship of a dog throughout her life to keep her company.
Mary is predeceased by her parents James Leo Hennessy and Ann Sampson Hennessy, along with 2 of her 3 brothers, James Leo Hennessy, Jr. and Joseph Patrick Hennessy.  She is survived by her remaining brother William David Hennessy who lives in Mesa, Arizona, along with 10 nieces and nephews, and 12 great nieces and nephews who are living all across the globe.
A devout Catholic, Mary loved to volunteer at the church in many different ways, her favorite being to teach CCD to children on Saturday mornings.
Mary’s life will be celebrated during a Mass held in the chapel at Church of the Ascension, 4853 Princess Anne Road, Virginia Beach, VA 23462 on Tuesday, November 13, 2018 at 1:00 PM.  There will be a short visitation/viewing starting at noon at Ascension church prior to the Mass.  Additionally, a graveside service will be held Friday, November 16, 2018 at noon at St John’s Cemetery, 80-01 Metropolitan Avenue, Middle Village, NY 11379 (Section 21).
In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to either of Mary’s favorite charities, Missionary Cenacle Apostolate in Maryland, or Missionary Servants Most Blessed Trinity in Philadelphia.

We will miss cousin Mary, her phone calls to catch up on things were always a welcome break in the day and she was always cheery.

Our thoughts are with you as you say good bye to Mary. She will always be the cousin that remembered everyone no matter how far away we lived. Her cards and phone calls will be sorely missed. She kept up with everything that was going on in our family and took the time to keep us all connected. Sending lots of love and hugs to all of her family.

May your family find comfort as “the hearer of prayer” embraces their heart (Psalms 94:19). Lean on one another for strength and encouragement to stay strong. We hope that the many cards, hugs, kind words, cherished memories, and loving prayers sustains your family during this most difficult.
