McKinley Charles Walker, Sr.

September 2, 1949 - November 25, 2021

McKinley Charles Walker, 72, passed away early Thursday morning November 25th 2021 at home. He was born September 2, 1949 in Hampton, Virginia. His father, Alexander W Walker Sr. a native of Manning, South Carolina and his mother, Alice Wright Walker of Princess Anne Maryland both preceded him in death. Mac, which is how he was fondly known, was born and raised in Aberdeen Gardens in Hampton, Virginia. Mac is also preceded in death by his wife Shirley Walker of Newport News,  Virginia. McKinley married Shirley Walker in 1975 and enjoyed a long and happy marriage until she passed in 2013.

McKinley graduated from George P. Phenix High School in Hampton, Virginia in 1967 and also graduated with two Bachelor of Arts degrees from Saint Leo College. He served his country during the Vietnam War in the United States Navy and was stationed in several Navy ports around the world including the Philippines at Subic Bay.

McKinley had several varied work titles which ranged from insurance salesman to human services house worker for severely mental and disabled patients. However, Mac was most fondly known for his musical expertise and talent in music. He was most happy when he was either performing music, teaching music or just enjoying listening to others play.

McKinley was a loving husband, father, brother and uncle. He enjoyed time with his wife and son. His faith in Jehovah and the Jehovah Witness community was supreme. His love for people in general and animals was very special. He was a big hearted man who never knew a stranger.

Left to cherish his memory is his son, McKinley Charles Walker Jr., his brother, Alexander Walker Jr., his sisters in law Sarah Walker of Hampton, Va., Ronda Joyner of Texas, Mickey Joyner of Texas and a  hosts of other relatives and friends. We are so proud that Mac positively influenced the lives of so many people both professionally and personally.

A memorial zoom service will be provided by the Jehovah Witness community at a later date. Altmeyer Funeral Home-Riverside Chapel, 7415 River Rd., Newport News is assisting with the arrangements.

What our families say...

In my opinion, there is no better facility in Virginia than Altmeyer Funeral Homes. Not only was Chris Sisler there to hold my hand every step of the way, his family members were holding the door on the day of the funeral to help and encourage me. I will never forget their grace. He led me and my family through the process as a personal friend and neighbor, and as the ultimate professional.
