“Randy”

2-10-1950 – 11-4-2019

Randolph Lee Smith “Randy”, 69, of Newport News, VA, passed away peacefully on November 4, 2019 and is now in the presence of the Lord.  Randy was born on February 10, 1950 in Gretna, VA.  He was the second of three children born to the late Henry Lee Smith and Emma Smith Allen.  Randy was a graduate of Northside High School in Gretna, VA and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore in Princess Anne, MD where he was a member of the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity.  Randy married the love of his life, Patricia Williams Smith, on August 9, 1975.

Randy worked as an art teacher in the Newport News Public School System for 7 years.  He then began a career working as a civilian at the Fort Eustis Army Installation as Director of the MWR (Morale, Welfare and Recreation) Division and the BOSS (Better Opportunity for Single Soldiers) Program. He loved his work there and remained devoted to the military until he retired with 30 years of service.

Randy has always been a devoted Christian servant in any church of which he was a member.  He has served in such capacities as Sunday school teacher, deacon, usher, choir member, men’s gospel singing group, school board member and chairman of the World Outreach Worship Center (WOWC) church academy, Christian marriage class teacher, men’s ministry core group, food distribution ministry, etc.

In his leisure time, Randy could be found enjoying his hobbies which included photography, music, arts and crafts, gardening, traveling, and spending time with family.  He will be fondly remembered as a very kind, honest and soft-spoken person (gentle giant) with a contagious smile.  As the family patriarch, our beloved husband, father and grandfather will be greatly missed, and we will always cherish his loving commitment and devotion to our family unit.

Randy was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Lee Smith and Emma Smith Allen; and stepfather, Russell Allen.  He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Patricia Smith; children, LaToya (Erick) Pryor, LaMar (Nicole) Smith, and LaNard Smith (Jasmyne Wheeler – future daughter-in-law); his 4 grandchildren, Erick Pryor Jr., Emmanuel Pryor, Syncere Smith and Savion Smith; brother, Sylvester (Charlotte) Smith; sister, Carol (Charles) Cook, and a host of other relatives and friends.

A time of visitation will be held on Friday, November 8, 2019 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at Altmeyer Funeral Home.  Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 9, 2019 at World Outreach Worship Center.  Memorial contributions may be made to www.alz.org.

What our families say...

In my opinion, there is no better facility in Virginia than Altmeyer Funeral Homes. Not only was Chris Sisler there to hold my hand every step of the way, his family members were holding the door on the day of the funeral to help and encourage me. I will never forget their grace. He led me and my family through the process as a personal friend and neighbor, and as the ultimate professional.
