Rebecca Hatcher "Becky" Kurtz

Rebecca Hatcher “Becky” Kurtz passed away on July 30, 2021, at the age of 84. Her survivors include her husband of 64 years, Franklin S. Kurtz Jr.; two children, Rebecca E.K. Rice (Monte) and Franklin S. Kurtz III (Mara); five grandchildren, Ashley (Kevin), Nina, Courtney, Delilah, and Serena; three great-grandchildren, Kelsea, Addilyn, and Finley; a sister, Harriet Hatcher Shore; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Nina Alderman Hatcher and Norris Clark Hatcher Sr.; a sister, Eleanor Hatcher Stanley; and brother, Norris Clark Hatcher Jr.

Becky was an avid card player, especially bridge, and enjoyed all types of sewing and needlework. She was also a brownie and cub scout leader. She cared deeply about nature and wildlife, especially birds, having shared in the creation of many bluebird trails. She also loved landscaping and other home improvements and gave generously of her talents in local garden clubs.

She was a graduate of Mount Airy High School, N.C., and the Woman’s College of the University of North Carolina, Greensboro, N.C. She had a long career as a math and science teacher at North Augusta High School and Aiken Technical College in South Carolina.

Her greatest joy was time spent with her family and close friends, and she passed along many of her creative skills to her children and grandchildren.

A celebration of Becky’s life will take place on Wednesday, August 11, beginning at 10:00 AM at Virginia Beach United Methodist Church, 212 19th St., Virginia Beach. A graveside service will be held at 3:30 PM at South Plains Presbyterian Church, Keswick, Va.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Virginia Beach United Methodist Church, South Plains Presbyterian Church, The Nature Conservancy, or the charity of your choice.
