Richard A. Harris, 72, of Virginia Beach, Virginia, died after declining health, on Tuesday, October 23, 2018 at his home. He was a 1964 graduate of Byhalia-York High School and a graduate of the Ohio State Barber College in Columbus. He retired as a Barber in 2017, after owning the “U. S. Male Barber Shop” in Suffolk, Virginia for 28 years
A Veteran of the U. S. Navy 1980-84, he enjoyed swapping jokes with fellow sailors while he cut their hair aboard the USS San Diego (AFS-6). He also enjoyed visiting countries in the North Atlantic and The Mediterranean.
He was a life member of the Masonic Lodge 30 in Suffolk, Virginia, but the love of his life was always his dogs. His dogs over the years, mostly Golden Retrievers, were constant companions and last one named Lilly was near as he slipped away. His favorite hobby was to fish the pond near his home.
Richard was born April 26, 1946 in Byhalia, Ohio to the late Lowell B. and Rachael I. (Jolliff) Harris. He married, Patricia (Patsy) Woodson, the love of his life, on May 2, 1982 and she passed away on April 16, 1991. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Danny and Donnie; a sister Barbara Bliss; and a nephew Robert Lowell Bliss.
He is survived by his daughter, Annette (Ray) Peters; grandchildren Amanda (Brandon) Rich and Jonathan Peters; a brother, Jesse David (Diane) Harris; nephews Joseph Harris and Benjamin (Krista) Harris and their children Julia and Stephen. He is also survived by his best buddy Kenney Denman, of Marysville, Ohio; they maintained a close friendship since grade school.
Altmeyer Funeral Homes & Crematory in Virginia Beach, Virginia will be handling Funeral arrangements. Funeral service will be held May 7, 2019 and Burial will follow at Suffolk Veterans Cemetery, in Suffolk, Virginia.
