Robert Ferdinand Valentine Jr.

March 18, 1937 - March 8, 2019

Robert Ferdinand Valentine Jr., “Bob”, went to be with the Lord on March 8, 2019.  He was predeceased by his parents, Robert F. Sr. and Lois J. Valentine.  He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Shirley M. Valentine, his sons Robert F. Valentine III and wife Regina, Steven W. Valentine and his wife Cheryl, and his daughter Vikki Valentine Vanderpool; grandchildren Justin Valentine and his fiancé Cammisa, Megan Bullard and her husband Tim, Wesley Valentine, Jason Valentine, and Joseph Benzing; and great-grandchildren Rosalyn Valentine, Sebastian Valentine, Julian Hernandez, Jasmin Hernandez; and his sister, Linda Savage Tuttle.

Born in Staten Island, NY on March 18th, 1937, he graduated from Norview High School in 1956. He attended the Free Will Baptist Bible College in Nashville, TN, and Middle Tennessee State University.

Bob began his Firefighting career with the Nashville Metro Fire Department in 1962, and after 10 years he moved back home to Virginia and continued his fire service career with the Department of Defense at Little Creek Naval Amphibious Base in 1972.  He transferred to the Naval Base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba in 1978 as an inspector, obtaining the position of Fire Chief in 1982.  He returned to Virginia Beach in 1984, as an Assistant Director for Fire and Emergency Services, Atlantic Division, Norfolk VA, and then assigned to the Southwest Division, San Diego, CA in 1998.  Returning to Virginia Beach and retiring from the Department of Defense in 2002. In his 18 years as an Assistant Director for Fire and Emergency Services, his duties took him to over 37 countries, evaluating Naval and Marine facilities. His career in the fire service totaled more than 40 years of dedication to his community and Country.

Bob was strong in his Christian faith, and enjoyed his church community.  He volunteered in many capacities in his church including singing in the choir, teaching Sunday school classes, and served as a member of the board of Deacons.

Bob’s passion in sports was watching and playing golf, and being a devoted Redskins fan, even during the rough times. Bob was also a member of the Masonic Lodge #1 in Norfolk, VA.

His devotion to his family was unquestionable, and he loved unconditionally. He will be greatly missed by his family, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

The family would like to extend their gratitude to his cardiologist, Dr. Ronald Stine, and his primary care physician, Dr. Alessio Salsano, and their staff, for their years of amazing and compassionate care.

A celebration of Bob’s life will be held at 2pm on Friday, March 22nd, at Altmeyer Funeral Home at 5033 Rouse Dr., Va. Beach, VA.  23462.

Bob was a big supporter of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, TN.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to St. Jude’s in his memory.
