Ruby Orie Wilkins, daughter of the late James and Ida Belle Greene, was called peacefully to be with the Lord on July 25, 2017. Ruby was born on July 3, 1941 in Raleigh, North Carolina. She graduated JW Ligon High School in 1959, where she was fittingly named “Miss Suave”. Ruby retired as a dental assistant from the Virginia Beach Health Department where she worked for over 35 years; a place where she was able to attain the lifelong friendships of many people. Loved by all with whom she spent time, Ruby always showed her caring and compassionate character. She was an active member of Freedom by the Word Ministry where she shared her love for the Lord. In her spare time, Ruby enjoyed crocheting, puzzles, and spending time with loved ones.
Ruby was preceded in death by her loving husband Ernest Sr and her oldest son Tim. Her beautiful life will forever be cherished in the lives of her children; Sheila O Mercado (Jose), Ernest L Wilkins Jr (Angela), Erica L Thompson, and Ida Clements (Scott); nine grandchildren, three great granddaughters, sisters Gertrude Cromwell (Julius) and Mae Lois (Clyde Sr), sister in law Gloria McClain; and a host of nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends.
The family believes that when someone passes, their life does not end but rather changes. We know that Ruby has reached a place of everlasting peace alongside Jesus Christ. While we grieve her passing, with or grief comes the lightness of hope.
The family of Ruby wishes to extend our sincere thanks to Altmeyer Funeral Home, Albert Horton Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bishop Clinton Cuffee, and Travis Mitchell.
A visitation will be held on Sunday, July 30th at Freedom by the Word Ministry, 1501 Virginia Beach Blvd. in Virginia Beach from 3:30 pm to 4:30 pm. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery, 5310 Milners Rd. in Suffolk at 9:00 am.
