02/03/1952 - 02/01/2017

Sharon Ann Paul, of Virginia Beach, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Wednesday, February 1, 2017, at the age of 64 years. She was born on February 3, 1952 in Camden, NJ to Daniel Paul and Grace Connell Paul.
Left to cherish Sharon’s memory are her sister Linda Paul Kiraly and Linda’s husband James, of Virginia Beach; nephews Daniel and David Love, both of Virginia Beach; and four grand-nephews. Further survived by other relatives and friends.

Sharon taught for over 35 years for the City of Virginia Beach Public Schools. The bulk of that time was spent in Holland Elementary where she won multiple awards to include Teacher of the Year, before retiring from Glenwood Elementary.
Sharon had a love for all animals, but she had a special place in her heart for horses and her beloved Boxers. In lieu of flowers donations can be made in Sharon’s name to an animal rescue of your choosing.
Please come join us for a casual gathering to celebrate the joy of loving Sharon at Waterman’s Surfside Grille, Atlantic Ave and 5th St., on Feruary 25th, 2017 from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM.
The Altmeyer Funeral Home-Southside Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements. Online condolences may be expressed at www.altmeyerfh.com.

Miss Paul was my 4th grade English teacher at Holland Elementary back in the 70’s. I cannot count the number of times I’ve mentioned her name over the course of my life. She was, by far, my favorite teacher. 4th grade Stephanie thought Miss Paul was the coolest person on the planet. She rode horses, jumped out of airplanes and drove an orange VW Thing.

Miss Paul encouraged and cultivated my love of reading and writing. She told me she’d be disappointed if she didn’t read an article I’d written in Cosmopolitan one day. I had no clue what Cosmopolitan was, but it sounded just as amazing as Miss Paul was, so her statement stayed with me. Throughout the rest of my time as a student, I’d remember Miss Paul’s faith in me, so writing became my greatest strength. I know it’s saved me a time or two, as I soon learned it’s not always what you know, but how you write it. 🙂

I’m not surprised Ms. Paul retired as a teacher – she had a way of making us all feel we were the best and brightest student she had ever taught. She most definitely had a profound effect on my life. As a teacher myself (Special Education), I know I channel much of Ms. Paul’s easy-going attitude and acceptance of all students.

Although I don’t know the family, I’m so sorry for your loss of this amazing woman.I hope it helps to know how dearly loved she was, and what an impact she made on any child blessed enough to walk through her door. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Sharon and I were 5th grade teaching partners at Holland ES in the mid to late 80s. She was a wonderful colleague. I never once heard her raise her voice. I am sorry for the family’s loss.

We went to Woodstock together.Once we had a class at the same time. I had a serious crush on you.I made that known one time when you and another girl went running behind me as I was bending over to take a drink from the fountain and I tripped you. You fell terribly and the other girl told you to tell on me. You looked at me and said no. Somehow you knew why I did it and had compassion on me. Needless to say our relationship never bloomed. Obviously I’ve never forgotten the event or the beautiful girl who was the Annette Funicello of my 6th grade dreams.
This news has brought me much sadness.Tears in my eyes.

Sharon Chenman (as I knew her) was one classy and beautiful lady. We shared many laughs while working together at Holland Elementary or catching her out here and about the beach area! I remember Norma D. and myself going to her quaint house on Indian River Road for delicious bread and I think we had crab legs. Other people were there too, but too many years have passed for me to remember exactly who else shared that yummy dinner. She was a fine cook as well as a fantastic teacher. Here’s to your memory, Sharon – you are one of my ‘most unforgettable characters.’

Mrs. Chenman (as she’ll always be to me) had the biggest hand in guiding me toward being a social studies teacher. I remember, as a freshman in college, thinking of her and her wonderful social studies class as I chose my major.
I was so proud to return to Holland to tell her I was teaching Social Studies.
She was happy, enthusiastic, respectful. So many wonderful things that make not only great teachers, but very decent humans.

Sharon was my favorite teacher and a big influence on my life. She was a free spirit and always marched to the beat of her own drummer, and she definitely didn’t put up with anyone’s nonsense in her class. She has to be hands down one of the most awesome human beings that I have ever met in my life. There are no words to express how much I respected her as a teacher and as a person. Her family should be very proud of the influence she had on all of our lives. I love you.
