Skylar Israel Surkes was granted her angel wings on December 24, 2019, following a lifelong illness. Her final days were spent surrounded by family and friends that Skylar had touched in some way throughout her short, yet very memorable life. Skylar’s life may seem too short to many, but those who were touched by her understood that the quality of existence far exceeds the quantity of time in which one lives. Her beautiful smile and contagious laugh could melt the hearts of those around her and though she never spoke a word, her voice and thoughts could always be heard.
Although Skylar’s illness made her appear frail, she possessed strength, perseverance, and an ability to overcome incredible odds and physical challenges. Her strength and courage taught us that each day is a gift and an opportunity to create lasting memories. She loved feeling the breeze on her face, listening to music, reading stories, sleeping all day, and playing all night.
With Skylar’s passing we remind others that her life is one to be celebrated. We will miss her every day, especially her beautiful smile. She will forever remain in our hearts. Through her teachings about life, we were able to create wonderful memories and it has been a privilege to care for and love her.
Skylar is survived by her loving mother, Anita M Kumar of Virginia Beach, VA; sister, Ariana M Surkes; maternal grandparents, Surendera and Pamela Kumar of Virginia Beach, VA; uncle and aunt, Aneil and Anita Kumar of Virginia Beach, VA; and cousins, Sajan Kumar and Mikaela Reedy.
She was predeceased by her aunt, Marie Reedy and great uncle, Gene Reedy.
