Victor L. "Max" Vaughan, Jr.

February 26, 1925 - July 15, 2021

Victor L. Vaughan Jr., also known as “Max”, passed away on July 15, 2021, at the age of 96 in Newport News, VA. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Virginia Vaughan; and his sister, Jane Vaughan Purdy.

Max served his country during WWII in the Army Air Corps. After his military services had come to an end with the conclusion of the war, he obtained a degree in Aeronautical Engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute. Max had a long and successful career at NASA as an aeronautical engineer- creating strides in the field with his designs associated with many renowned projects that are still used as reference today. He was a long-time member of the Warwick Moose Lodge #1711 and was a former member of St Georges Episcopal Church in Newport News.

He leaves to honor his legacy, his sons, Victor L. Vaughan III, and his wife, Susan Marie, and John Thomas Vaughan; daughters, Veleta Vaughan Coffin; Virginia “Ginny” Hintze and her husband, Gordon; grandchildren, Steven Coffin, Edward Coffin, Katherine Hintze, Garret Hintze, Victor L. Vaughan IV, James Daniel “Danny” Vaughan; and their families.

A gathering of family and friends will be on July 20, from 1:00PM to 2:00PM, followed by a service beginning at 2:00PM at Altmeyer Funeral Home-Denbigh Chapel, 12893 Jefferson Ave., Newport News, VA. Max will be laid to rest following funeral services, at Peninsula Memorial Park, 12750 Warwick Blvd., in Newport News.
