Wilhelmenia Holmes, 84, passed away on May 19, 2020. She was born to the late John and Ida Young in Norfolk, Virginia on March 12, 1936.
Wihelmenia will be remembered for her loving and caring nature for others. She was very involved in her church. She cherished children and taught the Beginners class. She was a dedicated team leader for potlucks on Sabbath and a prayer warrior. She loved the Lord and blessed us often, with her beautiful voice, by singing with the church choir and by serenading us with hymns.
“Mena” as some affectionately called her, was a nanny, by profession, for many years. The families that she worked for, loved her very much. She was also a wonderful cook. She made delicious oatmeal patties and the best vegetarian meatballs. She had a fun-loving personality and was not afraid to stand up for herself. She did things with love, knowing that she was heaven bound.
Left to cherish her memory is her uncle Ernest Wilkins and a very large church family.
A gathering to celebrate her life will take place on Tuesday, June 2, at Altmeyer Funeral Home Southside Chapel (5033 Rouse Drive, VA Beach) at 11:00 am

One Sabbath after church, Wilhelmina invited my three children and me to her home for the first time. She must have sensed that we had kindred spirits. We didn't know what we would be doing but we were thrilled to spend time with her. My mom and their grandmother was no longer with us and Wilhelmina treated us just like we were her immediate family members. We ate, played games, had worship, watched movies and enjoyed each others company. Not once did my children complain about wanting to be with their friends. We were all perfectly content. We had so much fun that time was not a concern until the movie ended. Then we found out how late it was. Wilhelmina was concerned about us being out so late because it was after midnight. Just imagine all those different ages getting along so lovingly. She made a place for all of us to sleep. We all slept peacefully. In the morning we had breakfast and headed home at some point. It was the beginning of many Sabbath afternoons with Wilhelmina. I look forward to see her again in heaven.
