William Clifford "Bill" McMurphy

April 20, 1940 - July 29, 2018

William C. McMurphy

William C. McMurphy (Bill) reached the end of his life’s journey on July 29th, 2018.  He was an avid storyteller, stranger to no one and grandkid-proclaimed “worst singer in the world.”

Bill was born in Pensacola, FL on April 20th, 1940.  Eldest brother to Maureen, Cliff, Ruth, Allie Nora, Michael, and Mollie. He was the devoted and loving husband to Carolyn McMurphy for over 45 years, father to Chris and Mike, grandfather to Chandler (19), Caleb (18), Austin (17), Macy (14) and Madison (14).  His most beloved title was “Pop”.

William was a longtime member of the US Military and was a Vietnam Veteran.  He served for over thirty years and retired as a Major in the Army as a Senior Aviator.  He loved flying the Blackhawk and made sure his last flight was in one. He loved to travel, especially his winters skiing and summers vacationing at the beach with his grandkids.

In addition to his time in the military, he also saw the importance in being a servant for the community and to the Lord.  He was a regular volunteer at the local food kitchen at his church and helped out with relief efforts after Hurricane Katrina.  He was a devout member of First Presbyterian Church of Norfolk.

Although he lived with Parkinson’s the last fifteen years of his life, he never complained and impressed us all with his unwavering faith, humility and sense of humor.  Everyone who met Bill couldn’t help but like him and the world was lucky to have him in it. We will all miss his goofy smile, big heart and kind spirit.

Visitation with the family will be on Monday, August 6th at 10am at First Presbyterian Church of Norfolk.  Funeral service will immediately follow at 11am.  Cemetery services will be at 2pm at Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery.

What our families say...

In my opinion, there is no better facility in Virginia than Altmeyer Funeral Homes. Not only was Chris Sisler there to hold my hand every step of the way, his family members were holding the door on the day of the funeral to help and encourage me. I will never forget their grace. He led me and my family through the process as a personal friend and neighbor, and as the ultimate professional.
