Newport News – Senior Chief William E. Mavis, USN (Retired), 78, passed away Wednesday, July 8, 2015.

Sr. Chief Mavis served his country with honor for over 23 years. He later retired from Civil Service after working as a Maintenance Supervisor. He is survived by his loving wife Dorothy; his brother Tom; his son Donald Townsend (Virginia); grandsons Scott Townsend (Malissa), Danny Townsend (Shannon); great-grandchildren Madison, Blake, Ryan and Austen.

The family will receive friends Monday, July 13 from 4-6 pm at Altmeyer Funeral Home, Denbigh Chapel, 12893 Jefferson Ave., Newport News. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to the American Diabetes Association at www.diabetes.org
